Party Time!

I just finished my 6th Bikram Yoga class. I've had 4 different teachers and done them at different times. Here's what I've learned so far.

1. I'm much stronger in the morning than the afternoon.

2. It's freaking HOT in there. But it's getting easier to take because I know what to expect.

3. I need 2 bottles of Smart Water. (One bottle cold and one bottle FROZEN)

4. I need one yoga mat and a bunch of towels.

5. A giant beach towel because I'm tall.

6. 2 more towels to sit on when I get in the car.

7. (And most important) A little hand towel. Why? Aha! When I get to class I get the towel wet then wrap it around my frozen Smart Water. Just when I can't take the heat anymore I put the cold towel on my face and it's like heaven. ( I'm pretty sure this is illegal yoga behavior)

8. I'm completely addicted to this yoga. I feel so fantastic the rest of the day.

9. Party Time in Bikram yoga means we get to take a sip of water.

I was telling my brother, The Sgt. Major, about my new Hot yoga. I was explaining how hot it was for 90 minutes! I have to sip Smart Water and smuggle in a frozen one just to get through. Can you imagine?! I asked him. Can you imagine the heat?! He was strangely quiet for a few seconds when it suddenly dawned on me. Of course he can imagine the heat! He fought in Iraq and Vietnam!!!

I'm an idiot. And it brings the whole thing into perspective. Doesn't really seem all that hard compared to that, now does it?

He thought it was pretty funny and now we joke about how HARD my hot yoga is. I love him. He's the best brother ever.

I read THIS article the other day and I thought I'd share a video with you from Etam, a French clothing company.

The Etam marketing team thought it would be a fun marketing idea to send a guerilla group of models (and a film crew) into open spaces to surprise/shock the public dressed only in lingerie. The representatives at the Musée d'Orsay were less than pleased when the girls teased their visiting art afficionados, claiming the group had no permission to film in the museum. The entire gang was thrown out into the cold without their coats.

Les Soldes

Living in the US, you may take for granted all the different retail sales that take place at any given time of the year. In Paris, there is a winter sale and a summer sale. Period. So if you're shopping in December or in June and you buy something ANYTHING you will surely regret it the following month when you see the same item for 70% less. Man that burns!

The sales here are always in the months of January and July. And for some reason, it's not all month long. I don't know who acts as the god of retail rules but I hope he dies soon as I'd like to take his job.

Today marks the first day of the winter sales so SexySultry and I braved the crowds in our heavy winter coats and scarves. That was our first mistake. It was an unseasonably warm 50 degrees today on top of the body heat of eleventeen billion people all cramming into tiny little french shops.

We were reduced to taking off our sweaters and outerwear which we then had to carry around in addition to the weight of our purchases and our handbags. I felt like I was weightlifting for 8 straight hours. (Yes, I spent 8 hours shopping today. It was like a marathon. Cashew would be so proud.)

We were out for the sole purpose of finding warm winter boots for SexySultry as I ~~am subjecting her to~~ offered her a plane ticket to join me in Scandinavia next month to visit my parents. She didn't find anything that was perfect so we ended up buying tons of other crap neither of us needs. Big surprise.

In the process, we have decided that it's time to start changing her look. She think she dresses like a nun. She wants to dress more like a fun-loving rock star. I am taking on the challenge and am becoming her style guru. Yay, how fun!!

Bikram Yoga. Day 2

Day 2

"Karen, if you feel sore tomorrow you should definitely come in and do another day."

"Okay."

The day after Day 1 of Bikram Yoga I was feeling muscles and things I forgot I had. Like cleaning out your closet and finding awesome boots, rhinestone jewelry and a prom dress you'll never need.........kind of. Anyway, I ponied up, threw on my running shorts (soooo 2 years ago) and a sports bra.

(Intense heat makes you increasingly immodest regarding clothes. I may be a nudist by February.)

It was actually cold and foggy that morning so I welcomed it into my soul. (Knowing I would be pining for a popsicle in a few minutes.)

The second day wasn't so ~~hideous~~ difficult. Maybe because I knew what to expect. Maybe because I wasn't wearing very much. I don't know.

My only goal is to stay in the room.

I stayed in the room.

This may be the only goal this year regarding Bikram Yoga.

I may never touch my toes, twist my body into a pretzel or do anything perfectly. But, by God, I will stay in that freaking room.

When my perky 20 something tiny little yoga instructor said we should clear our minds and get rid of anything that doesn't serve us, the only thing that came to mind was sneaking in an ice pack next class. Where to hide it would be the problem......

Bikram Yoga

You know when you say things out loud you didn't even know you were thinking about? That happened last week. (The first year of the new year, how cliche of me.....But cliche is a French word, No?)

5 and I were on a walk with our neighbors. We were off to Starbucks for my new favorite drink, Skinny Peppermint Mocha Latte, when I said "I'm going to do Bikram Yoga at least once a week this year." My sweet neighbor said "Oh great! I'll do it with you." And a New Year's Resolution was born.

I sort of forgot about it, because I'm going with the freaking flow this year and there's been a LOT of Lego building since Christmas. But my neighbor is very organized. She researched the different locations around Burbank and came up with 3 choices. We picked one and went to our very first class this morning.

Now, I had been hearing about this crazy yoga experience for awhile now. I knew it would be hot and probably a little hard. I dusted off my yoga mat, brought a towel and some water. Put on my yoga pants, tank top, grabbed my friend and headed over.

I think I may have subconsciously been just a teensy bit nervous because I got us lost 3 times before we found it. (I don't get lost) Anyhoo, I signed up for one month of unlimited yoga at a minimal price and headed into the room.

The instructor was very sweet as she said "It's your first time so take lots of breaks. Your only goal is to "stay in the room". Even if you just sit there for an hour and a half. Just stay in the room."

"Okay."

As I walked in, I was hit by a wall of heat reminiscent of the last heat wave of summer. You know, the kind you try to get out of as fast as you can? Peer pressure is a magical thing so I acted like this was all normal and spread my mat and towel out with my water bottle in just the right spot.

Then she came in and turned the heat on.

There were 32 people in class.

The room was 105 degrees.

I haven't officially "worked out" in a year and a half.

I was overdressed.

One person in class had to leave to hurl.

I took many breaks.

I am not bendy.

I stayed in the room for the entire hour and a half.

When we were done I was never happier to go outside in 75 degree weather.

I came home, took a much needed shower and tried to figure out why I want to do this again.

The rest of the day I felt delightfully relaxed or exhausted or both I don't know but I loved it.
I'm completely hooked and going again tomorrow.

Leek & Cauliflower Risotto

OMG people. It's the new year. It seems like just yesterday I was on a year-long trip around the world with Cashew and all of a sudden I woke up this morning realizing not only did my birthday, Christmas and New Years pass by me in a flash, but it's 2012! Crap! I mean, YAY! Right?

Resolutions? I think I'm going to go with the one I made last year. Due to my amnesia from the accident the previous year, I'm pretty sure it was June before I could remember what that resolution was. I kept walking around in a fog knowing I'd made a really good, attainable new year's resolution but what was it again??? DRINK MORE WATER. (Actually, to be honest it should be DRINK WATER. PERIOD.) So far this year I have drunk a liter a day which compared to maybe 8oz a month last year (if you count accidental ingestion when showering and brushing teeth) is quite an accomplishment.

Also, I am thinking about trying to vary my skills in the kitchen (now that Obsessed! is no longer around to tease me with his tantalizing culinary creations.) I can't serve my lethal quinoa recipe each and every meal, can I? No. I can't. That's a definite negative. Too many marriage proposals.

So my first attempt was Monday when I made a leek and potato soup with corn, turkey, tomatoes, noodles and 2 different kinds of cheese - Parmesan and Boursin. It was damn good if I have to say so myself.

My second attempt was last night when I made a pork medallion dish with pasta and veggies for SexySultry. I actually included one of my enemies (mushrooms) because she loves them so much. Dinner was delicious, according to my wife, but not very pretty so I chose not to take a picture.

Once I'm able to tear myself away from rewatching the JJ Abrams series Alias with SexySultry, maybe I'll get my ass over to the market to buy ingredients for my next attempt. Leek & Cauliflower Risotto (but with parsley, not coriander - enemy numero uno.) I can't wait. For the risotto. Alias too.

We just started season two when Lena Olin comes on the scene as Jennifer Garner's mother. I WANT TO BE A SEXY SPY WITH LOTS OF WIGS AND GIVE OUT ASS-KICKINGS BECAUSE IT'S MY JOB!

Dogs and Children

Lately, it seems like it's sunny all day ...until I want to go outside, that is. Then it starts raining and everyone on the street who is on his way to the bakery or on a pause clope (cigarette break) or walking his dog looks up at the sky with an expression of putain de merde (very common French expression - click the link if you want to know what that means.)

Even the dog being walked seems annoyed, as if it would say, "Ah crap. Now my fur is going to get all frizzy, my paws and undercarriage will be covered in the sidewalk schmutz and don't get me started on the smell. No one likes the smell of wet dog. That coupled with my constant halitosis really isn't going to help my game. Guess I won't be getting any action tonight. I'm really sick of humping couch pillows."

You know, if dogs could talk and all.

Speaking of which, the stairwell smells like wet dog. I hate that smell. Don't non-pet residences exist? I know it may be un-PC to exclude certain people from a residence but retirement homes and nudist colonies exist... Why can't someone come up with pet-free or child-free apartment buildings??

While they're at it, child-free airlines would be nice too.

Have I mentioned that the toddler directly behind me on the flight the other day screamed the entire way?! I never knew such small creatures could make so much noise and for two hours straight. If it hadn't been 8am I would've bought a fifth of booze to down and then if I still wasn't unconscious, I would've knocked myself out by smashing the bottle against my forehead. Nothing like a minor concussion to get a little peace and quiet! When we landed, I got off that plane so fast you would've thought my ass was on fire.

In other news, I've been told I should open a day-care center. Yes, people. You can trust me with your children. I swear. I'm actually a very gifted teacher, believe it or not. I bet I could teach your kids lots of useful things besides being seen and not heard ...like swearing and smoking and stuff.

I Love A Parade

Watching the Rose Parade is a tradition for me. Having it the day after New Year's Day is going to throw me off for the whole year. But seeing as it's only January 2nd, I'm trying to go with the freaking flow. (Ahem)

The Dream: Astonish the guys with a gorgeous breakfast while we sit around watching the parade together. They will smile warmly at me while they eat their delightful breakfast I made with love.

What really happened: As soon as the bacon started cooking 5 starts yelling "Bacon! Bacon! May I have bacon mom? Please? Now? I need it!" I explain that we are all going to watch the parade together. He and Hubby exchange looks like I'm crazy. 5 offers me actual cash to watch a kid's show, they eat breakfast so fast I don't think they tasted it then went in the back room to watch Star Trek.

In the spirit of going with the freaking flow I sit alone watching the parade and writing.

New Year's Eve Day my girlfriends and I got together at Jen's. She made these lovely spinach and cheese yummies and an amazing dish of grits with cheese and an egg on top. (I forgot to take a picture of that before I ate it.)

Don Antonio, SexySultry, CatchBlondie and I rang in the new year together at a Brazilian party in Montmartre where the champagne was flowing too freely and we all had unbearable headaches by 6am.

We all ended up back at Don Antonio's where I made some pasta for us all hoping it would help our champagne assassination.

I hope you all had a great night! Now it's time to make resolutions, n'est-ce pas?!

Crazy Christmas Presents

Harry Potter Hogwarts Legos Castle done! 5 and I have been working on this for a couple of days.

What does this have to do with being French Skinny? Nothing.

But I did get some delightful Sur La Table cookware for Christmas from Hubby and I've cooked in all of it so far. I roasted a chicken in a pot and then made chicken soup the next day. I also got a grill pan. Everyone's new favorite sandwich over here is a grilled baguette with black forest ham and smoked gouda. Lots of butter naturally.

There were a few crazy presents this year.

A giant helium remote control shark my son named Harry. (From Auntie Caryn)
A burping elf. (From Aunt Tammy)
A Fushigi Ball. (From Aunt Tammy)
A total of 9 boxes of Legos.
Battery operated Bugs that crawl around. (From Santa)
The Tingler. (From Aunt Tammy) You put it on your head, go up and down and it tingles your whole body. (I sort of super love The Tingler)

I still don't know what my New Year's resolutions and goals are going to be. I have a few ideas rolling around in my head. Maybe you can give me some ideas.

Freaking Out I Think

Cashew moved from Paris back to the USA 2-3 months ago. He made the decision and just assumed that duh! of course I'd follow him there. It was never a question, "Hey baby, I've been in Europe more than a decade, miss my family, and wanna move back to the US. What do you feel about that? Will you please marry me and come too?"

No, no. It was a decision he made all on his own without consulting me and now he's hurt, sad and miserable without me AND IT'S MY FAULT of course ...because I didn't go with him. You know, because I don't love him enough. And how dare I not follow with no questions asked. And this is what he really wants otherwise he'll never be happy and he'll end up resenting me. So I should just come.

Since he's been gone, I break up with him on practically a bi-weekly basis telling him that this is never going to work and that I'm not moving to America. I'm not really sure why I can't get it to stick. Either a.) I really suck at breaking up with people, b.) I'm not very good at the English language and don't make myself understood, c.) he must really, really love the crap out of me, or d.) he has to win me back because if anyone, he has to be the one doing the breaking up.

I have to either move to the States to be with him or I have to enter the witness protection program or something to finally be rid of him once and for all. Otherwise I'm going to give myself an ulcer.

When The Cat's Away...

Are you aware that if you eat way too much honey in too short a period of time while eating not much of anything else that you may or may not get a little nauseous and/or experience unpleasant *ahem* diarrhea?! Don't ask me how I know.

Good morning everyone!

You see, when Karen is on hiatus, I have to take advantage of that fact and post stuff she would normally frown upon because by the time she reads it and gives me a verbal lashing, it's too late to really do anything about it. (I bet you can imagine what a fun kid I was. Do NOW. Ask questions LATER.)

So what else can I talk about today that she would normally make me avoid? Hmmm...

Oh, I know! *insert evil laughter here.

So before I left Paris, I was bubonic plague sick (thanks SexySultry) and for a completely unrelated reason ended up in and out of doctors' offices, medical laboratories, and the hospital. Everything takes eons to analyze and diagnose, so I am still not sure what really caused my malaise but was finding myself randomly getting dizzy, fainting, with whopping headaches, sensitivity to light, nausea, abdominal pain and other glorious details that (for Karen's sake) I'll spare you for now.

FranzSwitzer was convinced it was panic attacks (which I have never experienced before.) SexySultry thought it was some sort of lady infection which would cause me to be infertile. Cashew thought it was bad luck, lack of exercise, poor diet and the fact that I haven't agreed to marry him and move back to the States. I was leaning more towards holymotherofgod whatifi'mpregnant - which is impossible, I know. But that's my go-to freak-out. Otherwise, my faithful standby is ohmygod imustbedyingofcancer.

One morning, I had to have a blood test at 6:40am. I was not allowed to eat or drink beforehand for 8 hours. Plus, SexySultry and I pulled an all-nighter discussing important issues, so I was beyond tired and grumpy.

I sat in the waiting room for a long time and then finally saw the healthcare worker who was pleasantly taking my blood while sharing that her sister just gave birth to a third child even though she used contraceptives. Great! That eases my mind! Then she took me into a different exam room to do a test number two for which I was not allowed to wash beforehand. (This detail comes into play a little later in the story.)

I mentioned the antibiotics I'm currently on to the nurse about to do the exam just as I had earlier to the receptionist who said it wasn't a problem. This nurse disagreed and refused to do the lady examination telling me to come back after the weekend after not taking the antibiotics for 72 hours.

So there I was, lying with my feet in stirrups naked (except for my socks) from the waist down for no reason at all for the first time that day. Fun... especially knowing I'd have the pleasure of repeating the exercise in a few days. Yay me.

Keep in mind all this happened in French.

So as I passed back by the reception desk, I quietly inquired about the pelvic scan and was told I just had to go across the hall and they'd see me right away. Like a good girl, I followed the woman's instructions but radiology had a sign posted that they were closed until 8:40am. It was 7:30am.

Grrr...

I ran over to the bakery for a pain au chocolat to cheer myself up now that the blood tests were over and I was allowed to stop starving myself. It was too early. The chocolate croissants were not yet out of the oven. I had to settle for second rate brioche with chocolate chips. NOT THE SAME THING AT ALL.

At 9am I waltzed back over to radiology where a rather surly woman told me that the earliest they could possibly see me was in 10 days. I tried to explain it was an emergency but she was having none of my ohmygodi'mdyingofcancer nonsense. I finally gave up and asked her if she could send me someplace where I could be seen immediately. She gave me a business card listing some hospital in a suburb I've never been to and told me it was 10-20 minutes away.

At noon, I finally found the hospital after being lost forever in the suburbs (or as my dad would call it "taking the scenic route to explore local architecture".) I then was lost within the confines of the hospital for a good 15 minutes before I found the right department. When I talked to the receptionist, she told me the earliest she could see me was in 3 hours.

Double grrr...

Keep in mind that I hadn't slept at all yet and that all I'd had to eat in the last 12 hours was the ugly, red-headed step-child of the chocolate croissant. So I went back home and ate the quinoa I had prepared (although it was bulgar instead of quinoa but I basically used the same recipe of mine which Karen posted recently.)

Cut to 3 hours later, I was back in front of the same receptionist for the appointment I had made in person and I was THE ONLY person in the waiting room. I was still dead-tired, unwashed, no make-up, no jewelry, homeless looking with no glamour or patient smiling whatsoever. She told me to sit and wait my turn.

For 45 minutes I sat in one of 50 empty chairs in the waiting room. A handful of people came in after me, each time taking the seat DIRECTLY NEXT TO ME after having talked to the receptionist. I mean, come on people! In a room full of 49 empty chairs, is it really necessary to try to sit in my lap?! It's called PERSONAL SPACE for crying out loud. Figure it out!! I finally ended up changing to a different row of chairs after I nearly murdered the third person who invaded my space.

Besides, hospitals are full of sick and dying people. Why on earth would anyone want to stand close to any other stranger in there? They could be exhaling invisible anthrax fumes for all you know!

Finally it was my turn. A nurse called out something that remotely sounded like my name (gross mispronunciation) and I jumped up and followed her down a long hallway to a shiny red door. She held my chart in one hand and pointed at the door with the other telling me (in French) that I had to go in there, remove pants and shoes before meeting her by going through the next door which led into the exam room.

I didn't really think that much of it because I went through all these same tests no more than 10 months ago and felt like an old pro. So I wasn't really listening, went into the undressing room to do my thing and met the woman in the exam room 30 seconds later.

When I walked it, it was very dark with an exam bed covered in paper and all the machines plugged in, monitors on and buzzing. Normal enough. But the nurse stood there staring at me kind of funny and the big door which they push gurneys through to the hall was wide open.

I was standing there stark naked from the waist down (minus my sexy black socks.)

I was so tired and stressed out that it didn't really hit me until much later. The rest of the exam kind of went by in a haze.

The nurse got over her initial staring and decided to leave me in the room alone after announcing that the doctor would be there soon. She closed the door on her way out.

Within 10 seconds, the door burst open and in walked a man, obviously the doctor. He looked exactly like an actor whose name I can't remember currently.

I even tried to do a little research for you, people. I swear! I googled "crazy looking italian american actor" and similar type things and spent eternity looking at everything that came up in Google images. I went so far as browsing through IMDB.com a little even though it's pretty hard to find someone when you can't remember what he's ever been in. I can tell you this though, it's not Quentin Tarantino, Jeff Goldblume, Robert Deniro, the other famous Robert Deniro-type guy (*update, SexySultry reminded me his name is Al Pacino,) Joe Turturo or Joe Pesci. He kind of looks like a shorter, younger and more Italian Jon Lovitz but not Jewish, with a thinner build, and longer curlier hair. Narrows it down for you, doesn't it?!

Back to the story - The doctor told me to lay down on the lovely, paper-covered bed. I put my legs in the stirrups (I was trying to show self-motivated courage and purpose in my haste to get all this terribleness over with.)

Dr. NotJonLovitz (but kind of equally weird - might just have been the fact that I was half-naked) looked at me funny and grabbed my knees with a smile, gently guiding my legs out of the stirrups and back onto the bed in a straight position. Then he pulled out that deodorant applicator looking thingy and squirted that cold gel stuff onto my belly.

Awesome. Second flat belly sonogram of the year. Nothing makes you feel weirder than seeing yourself in one of those scenes from the movies with the happy pregnant lady looking at her baby for the first time. He scanned externally first, then took the less-friendly looking, non-deodorant applicator looking thingy, more long curling-iron gone bad looking thingy out and covered it in a condom. He then did the internal scan and mentioned something about right ovary blah blah the whole nine. "You're not pregnant but if you play your cards right, today or tomorrow, you could be!!"

WTF?

He wiped all the cold gel gook off me the best the man knew how, didn't give me any extra clean towels to do the job right, and left the room telling me to go back to the waiting room.

After waiting for the print-outs and analysis for about an hour, I was sent home.

Many hours later, probably close to midnight when I'd slept a few hours and remembered that I'd forgotten to go to the pharmacy to pick up my prescriptions, something clicked somewhere in my pea brain as I was telling SexySultry the story. She was crying laughing at the image of me stressed-out, nervously sweating, half-naked in my black socks, unwashed, unwaxed, unfed, sleep-deprived standing in an exam room with the door wide open to the hallway for a PELVIC SCAN ...*not* a vaginal scan.

Ah-HAAAAAAA... All of a sudden the light was going on. Male doctor without warning (usually in France, they courteously ask your permission or at least inform you if you're having lady exams that it won't be a lady doctor.) Open door. No stirrups. Weird expression on nurse's face.

Crazy, stressed out, foreign, pantless, abnormally tall Chewbacca lady standing there in the dark nervously tugging her shirt down the few inches it would stretch below her waistline who obviously understands every word being said and can communicate her needs and issues fine but yet somehow has misunderstood something along the way. Slightly confused slash amused expression on Dr. NotJonLovitz's face. Why is the blond Amazon woman half-naked?

After I got over the intense mortification, I decided to take the glass is half full point of view. Haha, French social medical system!! I just got 2 exams for the price of 1!! (Hey, it certainly cost me in other ways but just let me linger in the delusion that I received a gift somewhere in the span of that day.)

Fire Punch Elf

Since Shaboomy brought up the Elf, I thought I'd tell you a little about him.

The Elf came the day after Thanksgiving. 5 named him Fire Punch Elf (Merry Christmas). The Elf flies to Santa every night to check in and party with his friends then flies home before we wake up and either hides or gets into something.

Tomorrow will be his last day at our house until next year.

This morning we awoke to find Fire Punch Elf building marshmallow snowmen.

Yet Another Good Deed Gone Bad

I guess my Christmas present to Karen is relieving her of blogging duty for a week so she has more time to do last minute shopping, cookie baking, attending to a sick kid, Elf hiding and whatever else perfect, over-achieving moms like her do the week before Christmas.

Oh yeah, the Elf on the Shelf lives in her house and she's not blogging about it. That's right. It's all over her Facebook page (where everyone connected to her who knows her and loves her despite the fact that she's perfect.) But when it comes to the blog-o-sphere, she's holding back so that all of you who don't know her won't hate her because she's sickeningly perfect.

But I'm on to you, Miss Goody Two-Shoes. Bam! (And sorry in advance - I know you hate when I post loooooong blog entries. Please don't hurt me!)

Anyways, since Karen is a role-model to many, including me, I tried to put on my best happy homemaker hat the other day. I baked. I use that term very loosely. Actually, what I did was attempt to make Rice Krispie Treats for the first time in my life. Big mistake.

On the bright side, I didn't burn anyone's house down nor did I cut off any of my digits.

I knew that SexySultry was going to come home from a day of shopping and insist that we exchange our gifts that night since I'll be far away on Christmas. It wasn't something she said, but I know her well enough to anticipate her excitement at finding the perfect gift for me. And I was right.

So to add to our holiday celebration, I thought it'd be fun to watch a pure Parisienne turn up her nose at something so very American and so definitively not healthy/organic/natural/meant-for-human-consumption. I had SocialButterfly bring me a box of Rice Krispies and a bag of marshmallows from New York since it's pretty difficult to find such non-French processed sugars and saturated fats over here.

Let me reiterate the fact that I have never before made Rice Krispie Treats in my life even though I've shoved tons of them in my pie hole over the years. I stood in SexySultry's kitchen melting the butter and watched it starting to brown. I already anticipated the disaster that was about to ensue. I turned down the heat on the electric stove, added the marshmallows and phoned TooNice in Atlanta who has two children under ten years of age.

"Hello?"

"Hi. I have a quick non-emergency emergency-like question to ask you."

"Okay."

"What do you do to OW I JUST BURNED MYSELF how can you... Why won't my marshmallows melt?! I mean, they have been in this pan for almost 10 minutes and they're soft-ish but refuse to disintegrate into fluff."

"Huh?"

"I'm trying to make Rice Krispie Treats for the first time in my life. I can conquer complicated crap like white chocolate and dark chocolate mousse in layers with home-made crème anglaise and a raspberry coulis from scratch! I've seen four-year-olds make this crap practically unsupervised so WTF am I doing wrong?!"

TooNice burst into a fit of hysterical laughter. (PS - She's the one who rescued me when I burned down the kitchen, covered the rest of the previously white interior of the house in a greasy black film, and had to go to the hospital's burn ward the day before Thanksgiving in 2008 on the East Coast where I was not trying to cook something complicated but just trying to heat oil which exploded into flames to fry up pre-packaged jalapeño poppers from TGIFridays. Please refrain from judging me. This was before the French Skinny.)

"Did you add enough butter?"

"What's my name?! Please! Of course I added enough butter. Butter is second only to bacon in my world!"

"What are you doing right now?"

"Adding more butter."

More laughter. Some polite chit-chat about what she's doing, how the kids are doing, her parents' impending visit for the holidays...

"Okay, so it's been 5 minutes. The butter I added has completely melted but the marshmallows are still in ball shape. Maybe the wok isn't hot enough but it's an electric stove and when I had the heat up higher everything started to burn. So now I have a huge mess on my hands, a layer of burnt stickiness on the bottom of the wok and a melted spatula that I have to replace yet STILL my marshmallows won't melt!"

"You're doing this in a wok?! Are you crazy?!"

"She doesn't have any other cookware big enough."

"Try putting them in the microwave then."

SexySultry does not like to touch food with her hands and hates to cook. So the kitchen is a little limited to say the least. I started opening up cabinets trying to find a suitable microwaveable container.

"What should I put them in?" I wondered aloud.

"Something that's not metal. And microwave safe."

Thanks, Sherlock. But I suppose her lack of faith in me is understandable. We promptly hung up the phone as I decided to put the first 5oz of marshmallows in a glass bowl in the microwave and wait to do the second 5oz later as I couldn't find anything big enough. I put 2 minutes on the timer and went about washing the gook off the melted spatula to see if it was salvageable.

Within 5-10 seconds, I (luckily) had the bright idea to check the marshmallows. CRAP! I quickly opened the microwave door upon discovering that the marshmallows had expanded to 800 times their original size. I pulled the bowl out and tried to stir the mess around with a wooden spoon and get everything back into the bowl.

Guess what?! STILL NOT MELTED.

After exploding the second batch of marshmallows I gave up and decided to throw everything back into the wok on low heat and add the Rice Krispies anyway. I mashed everything around with my bare hands (not a good idea) and added a full bag of M&M's for color (also not a good idea.) The candy melted and the mixture became a mess of colors and at no point in time did the marshmallows resemble anything remotely close to fluff.

But I was close to tears at this point and had to finish what I started before I realized that SexySultry owns no brownie pans. No big deal. I improvised with a bread pan.

I give you, Rice Krispie Loaf...

Sometimes I really LOVE photoshop.

PS - I was completely sober.

PPS - SexySultry actually liked it (or so she said.) She even took some to work the next day and shared with her very-French, very-opinionated coworkers (but maybe it was just to have a good laugh or to prove the ridiculousness to them in case they didn't believe her.) I would've liked to have been a fly on the wall for those 10 minutes!!

The House That Snot Built

So to give you an idea of my level of laziness slash it's-not-my-fault-I'm-unmotivated, I give you this image. Now you can see why (at least for the last week) I don't get my butt off the couch more often and write blog posts.

This is just an hour's worth of work. I am very busy trying to rub away all the skin on and around my nose. Went through an entire Kleenex box in one day. I told you - bubonic plague. (PS - I never get sick so I don't know how to do it without whining. PPS - Maybe I'm a dude.)

I know this is a blog about yummy food and fancy French fashions and whatnot so I'm probably being very inappropriate but I DON'T CARE. If I have to suffer, so shall you. (I am a giver. I like to share. You're welcome.)

In related news, my birthday is on Friday and you're all welcome to send me people who will massage the bowling ball sized knots that have formed in my back and neck. I thank you in advance.

Nespresso Runs My Engine

Obsessed! got me hooked on Nespresso (or crack, as Cashew calls it) when I first moved to Paris (which is good since I never knew how to make coffee from scratch {because SwimSwim spoiled me with coffee in bed every day for 7 years} until ManEater taught me how to make it all by myself the summer before last in Venice Beach.)

I would like to claim that I've had absolutely no coffee yet today ...but we all know I would be lying.

I like the dark flavors best (Ristretto, Arpeggio, Capriccio, Volluto) and although I usually try limiting my crack intake to one or two per day, sometimes I overdo it and my friends end up receiving dozens of amped-up, barely intelligible, certifiably insane emails on such occasions.

Recent transgression:

Do you ever get obsessed with a chin hair that you can feel is there even though it's probably not yet catching anyone's attention other than your own but you're out in public or on a date or something with no mirror and no tweezers so you just sit there fondling that up-to-now invisible spot on your chin until you've scratched the crap out of it hard enough so it bleeds thereby drawing attention to something only psycho you had previously noticed? Yeah, because I sure as hell do.

There are lots of famous Americans who do advertisements over here. Tony Parker in currently starring in a Quick Burger commercial (Belgium & France's answer to McDonald's slash Burger King.) Who knew Tony Parker is French?!?! Oh. All of you? All of you but me? Yeah, I live under a rock.

Focus. George Clooney! Mmmm... he's dreamy. And he's super cute in the commercials. Here's a recent one that I particularly like...

So what was my original point for this post? Oh. Right. SexySultry is my hero. She noticed I was running out of capsules and went to the Nespresso store for me to stock back up. I love her. I gushed to Cashew about my love for "my wife" and the coffee delivery the other day. He was a little offended as he ordered the exact same amount of the exact same flavors 2 weeks ago from Nespresso to have shipped to me overnight as a surprise. Where was his love and gratitude, he wondered? The coffee he purchased online hasn't arrived yet. STRANGE.

I'm pretty sure some envious neighbor is stealing my mail. I'm also missing 3 paychecks. And the French postal service is not being helpful AT ALL. (A story for another day.)

Honey Heals

Karen's post about treating her kid's cough with honey reminded me to tell you about the French and their honey obsession.

The French are very gourmet and super particular about things that we eat and drink. They believe that everything has to happen in a certain order and over a certain period of time, hence the fact that you'll never really see a true Frenchman eat on the run or standing up. True Frenchies eat appetizers first (l'entrée,) then the main course (le plat,) before slowly enjoying some cheese with maybe a little fruit, a dessert and then their coffee. The coffee has to be a tiny cup of espresso, no milk or sugar added. It has something to do with digestion and the fact that they say milk doesn't pair well with coffee in your belly and counteracts whatever it is that the coffee is supposed to do.

(You think I could do some research and give more solid, viable explanations backed up with facts, right? I know. I'm lazy. So sue me. Besides, I'm only trying to help you. If you research the information for yourselves you're much more likely to retain the knowledge. You're welcome.)

But I digress... HONEY. Right.

So, Frenchies love their honey. Organic honey is the best but only if it comes from France, natch. Because cross the border into Spain for example and the honey is unacceptable! I'm serious here, people. I see Frenchies looking at the label for the origin of the honey and turn on their heals and walk away in a huff with a disgusted look on their face if it comes from their neighbors or *gasp* from further abroad.

The honey business here is no joke. They have eleventeen billion different varieties of honey and each kind has its own set of properties. All honeys have antioxidants, antibacterial, and hygroscopic properties. The darker the color of the honey, the better it is for you (generally speaking.)

Lavender flower honey can be ingested to help the respiratory system and minimize acne or can be directly applied to superficial burns to act as a humectant and antimicrobial to aid in healing. Orange blossom honey is good to fight insomnia and migraines. The list goes on and on and on...

SexySultry has caught a bad case of the bubonic plague (at least that is what she sounds like when she's coughing) and she sent me to fetch a few different organic honeys to help her throat. (Gasp - they're from a French company but the bees are Spanish and Italian. Damn those pasta loving bees!) Luckily she stocked up because now I have her disease (although much milder) and am enjoying the healing properties of Propolis, Thyme and Lavender honey.

Joyeux Dimanche - Le Bon Marché

It's chaos all over Paris. That's right, it's Christmas shopping season and this is the final weekend for last-minute shoppers. I personally hate crowds and usually get most of my shopping done before September (no, I'm not neurotic... or a control freak. I swear! I leave that to Karen.)

As I'm traveling to Scandinavia for the holidays, I have to go buy a few semi-fresh French specialties before I go(for which I had to wait until the last minute,) so I am forced into the craziness. Wish me luck as I battle the sardine-can crowds on the Metro and the intense beret-wearing, baguette-wielding, brutal fight-you-till-death little old ladies at Le Bon Marché! (PS - I almost got arrested once for trying to take photos inside this joint. No photography allowed. PPS - This is where all the nuns shop and I'm a little obsessed with catching them in their "natural habitat." PPPS - I don't know if the nuns have any relation to why I'm not allowed to take pictures in there.)

I wish internet shopping was easier in this country and that international shipping didn't break the bank!

Tea For Two

Yesterday was my (late) granny's birthday.

Happy Birthday Mormor! You are greatly missed by us all.

My granny loved tea. I remember sitting with her in her bed in our PJs as a child drinking Earl Grey (mine was more milk than tea, but no matter) as she thumbed through the newspaper and shared occasional comments/remarks with her husband on the other side of the room. Yes, they slept in separate twin beds. That doesn't mean they weren't deeply in love. He used to bring her flowers for no reason quite often, but that's a story for another day.

Anyway, she died a few years ago right before I moved to Paris. (Her death may or may not have been one of the reasons why I bought a one-way ticket to Paris 3 months later without first finding a job or taking stock of how damaging that could be to my relationship, but that's a question to answer in therapy. PS - I don't like doctors. PPS - I am not in therapy. PPPS - I know some would say that I should be.)

I lived in France in the 90s and she loved coming to visit me. One of our favorite things to do together was to go to the tea salon "Mariage Frères."

Their tea canisters are beautiful and their teas are heavenly.

The shop slash restaurant is gorgeous in and of itself.

Our favorite is Roi des Earl Grey.

Anytime I have international visitors now, I always take them to Mariage Frères and drink a cup for my granny and wish she were here.

Leek, Carrot and Ginger Broth

This weekend I have 6 parties to go to. Holiday parties, dessert parties, cookie parties.......whew! I also have a kid that is getting over being sick so I might not make any of them. When I went to the store for chicken noodle soup supplies I found these beautiful leeks, carrots and ginger. I came home and made a giant batch of broth. This will be breakfast lunch and dinner in between parties or not.

In a big pot:
Leeks cut and washed. (Just use the white part)
Carrots cut and washed. (Carrot tops given to very grateful bunny who lives next door)
Ginger sliced.
One bouillon cube.
Cayenne pepper.
Cover everything with water and get to a boil. Then cover and turn down to simmer. I cooked mine for about 3 hours. Just keep tasting. Then I strained everything through a fine mesh colander.

Party on my friends.

Buckwheat Honey for Coughs

Just a quick post to tell you about Buckwheat Honey. 5 had a terrible 24 hour bug accompanied by a cough 2 days ago. I took him to the doctor yesterday and he prescribed Buckwheat Honey for his cough. He said researchers had compared Buckwheat Honey to the best over the counter cough suppressant on the market and the honey won.
But it has to be buckwheat. That's the key.

Just a little spoonful every 4 to 6 hours.

Shaboom's Quinoa Recipe

I asked Shaboom for her famous Quinoa Recipe. (Okay I begged.) This recipe has been known to make men fall in love, propose marriage and do any bidding you deem necessary so be very very careful who you make it for.

Shaboom's Quinoa Recipe:

i don't really do recipes
but i can try to tell you how i make it
good luck

1. make current boyfriend/potential-fiancé/lover du jour go BUY the ingredients while i lounge in bed and drink coffee
2. yell at him for not taking out the trash once he gets home (if he's just a lover du jour he is exempt)
3. get dressed (haha, no. not really. unless there's bacon involved. then it's mandatory.)
4. look at directions on quinoa box (to understand the water to grain ratio) but then i don't really follow them. i was never good at following directions. (beat of own drummer)
5. start chopping whatever vegetables i remember to put on list for man slave to buy. usually it's 2 zucchini, 3 peppers (one of each color,) a crap-load of onions and garlic (1kg?) and as much bacon as i can get away with (500g - 1kg)
6. get out giant wok or huge soup pot, what ever's available. start with a few tablespoons of salted butter (like half a stick.)
7. when pan is hot, add butter. when butter is melted, add onions and garlic.
8. when onions and garlic are transparent, add BACON! and seasoning. i usually put in herbs de provence, salt, pepper, piment d'espelette. but sometimes i do saffron, S&P and fresh parsley.
PS - if you're anti-BACON or muslim or jewish or whatever religions that are opposed to YUM, you can use sliced beef or chicken breast or whatever else floats your boat... like tofu *GAG ME.
9. when bacon is cooked through but not crispy, add peppers and zucchini. (can add eggplant, mushrooms *barf, corn, okra, or whatever tickles your fancy.)
10. when all veggies are soft and cooked-looking, add some broth (chicken, beef, pork, veggie, doesn't matter) and the quinoa. (i think the quinoa i get is 500g but maybe 1kg, i don't know. i play it by ear, sister. i think for 500g i add 3 cups of broth but not really sure... i just feel it out.)
11. as the quinoa absorbs the flavors of the BACON! and other non-important crap, it also absorbs the water. quinoa usually only needs 10 minutes to not taste like raw macaroni so if you're low on liquid, just add more.
12. when ready to serve, you can add grated cheese and tomatoes if you're feeling gluttonous. salsa, sour cream, olives and avocado if you're in a mexican mood. olé!
13.invite at least a dozen of people over because that is enough yumminess to last for a week if you have to eat it alone. it could last all year if you're doing french skinny portions.

This recipe can also be used with bulgar or rice or pasta or polenta or couscous...
I've tried quinoa, bulgar and pasta. Polenta and couscous are not yet appreciated in this house. Maybe someday...
BTW - I've only ever made white quinoa in Europe but it was always red in the US.

Yes, I'm Still Alive

I haven't been writing lately because I'm fighting off a mean case of the reds and all I have handy even remotely resembling a light-saber is a baguette and then I just think about getting fat and the whole cycle begins to repeat itself. Also, every time I get a smidge of inspiration, I'm either not near my computer or can't be bothered to go through the laborious process of punching the tiny letters on the screen one-by-one on my iPhone blogger application. Or I'm on a train and am too afraid to pull out my phone for fear of getting mugged again.

But I digress.

So I'm back in Paris again FINALLY after like a year of non-stop travel. Come to think of it, I'm on another plane in less than 3 weeks and OMG did you know that I've been browsing fancy coffee makers online even though I'm very limited in my coffee brewing knowledge? Thank heavens ManEater taught me how to use a French press the last time I was in LA.

Sometimes weird thoughts pop into my mind (actually all the time) and sometimes it goes like this:

My Thought - "You should exercise or something. Maybe you could have that flat stomach you wish existed without the help of Photoshop or anorexia."

My Reality - "That would mean crunches or a physical trainer or having some kind of kinky sex that you can't even dream up."

To be clear, weird thoughts pop into my mind all the time but only rarely are they about physical self-improvement. Most of the time it goes like this:

My Thought - "I could really go for a pain au chocolat right now."

My Reality - "That would mean walking to the bakery or having sex with my partner to get him to go get me one. That seems like an awful lot of hassle. Guess I'll just drink coffee instead."

Guess how many cups of coffee I've had today?!?! Thank the lord Cashew left his Nespresso machine behind when he moved to America.

*side note*
To walk to the bakery means exposing myself to the noise of all the children at the elementary school across the way (exposing myself TO THE NOISE, I don't go around flashing children). Holy crap kids are loud. They're running around like wild animals screaming and crying... even when they're having a good time. Parents must not appreciate peace and quiet, otherwise why would they willingly have children!? How could they voluntarily give up the peace and quiet? Or maybe they're all just secretly rich enough to have sound-proofed bedrooms and nannies and stuff ...or they're secretly deaf.

*more uninteresting crap related to side note*
How do I always seem to live across from a school or some other child-noise related facility? When I lived in France in the mid-nineties, when I lived across from that t-shirt factory in China, when I first lived in LA (Burbank,) and my last apartment in Paris... I lived across from parks, schools, etc.

PS - I never lived in China.

I make no sense. And I need more coffee. And maybe a lobotomy.

Nothing in this post is even remotely related to The French Skinny, except maybe the pain au chocolat part, I guess.

4 days of Thanksgiving indulgence has left me ~~wanting~~ needing to go back to the French Skinny lifestyle.

The French Skinny lifestyle that is fast, efficient and delicious.

Sweet Basil

Saturday morning's Farmers Market was fantastic.

I picked up some fresh herbs.

Sprouts

Different kinds of sprouts.

Peas

Threw it all together and it looks like this.

Half a cup of dry Red Quinoa cooked with vegetable broth instead of water.
Add tomatoes, onion, sweet basil, sprouts, peas, mung beans, pine nuts, olive oil, balsamic vinegar and cayenne pepper.
Garlic quark on top. (Goat cheese is wonderful mixed in as well.)

All of these out of a half a cup of quinoa! I packed them in their own little containers and popped them in the fridge. I don't have to think about what I'll have for lunch all week. (Except to drool)
This might seem a little monotonous to you but I crave this stuff. It's super healthy and ready to go.

You can eat it cold but I like mine hot.

Fresh mint and lemon for my sparkling water.

I'm having tea with almond milk instead of half and half.

Walking at least 2 miles a day.

Let's get French Skinny by Christmas!

Salmon Sashimi with carrots and green onions

I know we are all getting ready for Turkey Day but I wanted to share my first attempt at Salmon Sashimi. I watched a few videos on how to cut the salmon and gave it a whirl. I've learned it's all about the fish. I found a fish guy at the Farmer's Market. He has fresh water and salt water salmon. This is fresh water. Not as lean as salt water but tastes like butter.

I cut the salmon skin off and fried it up for crispy salmon skin rolls. They were gone before I could take a picture.

My technique needs some work and the rice was a disaster but the salmon was fantastic.

It's official. One night a week is sushi/sashimi night. I'm thinking long about Saturday we'll be tired of Turkey and want something different.

And now......back to Turkey Day.

New Shoes

Yesterday, I was given these gorgeous orange suede shoes. They were my Neighbor Wife's but didn't quite fit her so she gave them to me. The only problem is, I don't really have the life for these.

I keep trying to imagine where I would wear them. Yes, if I lived in Paris I wouldn't think twice about wearing these to the market. But in Burbank?

I would have to go to a different supermarket because I know everyone at Pavilion's and they would ask where I was going. "Just home to do laundry."

Walking 5 to school? I don't think so. 2 miles is a little much for an amateur like me.

Date Night? Since we eat at 5:00 it's still light out. Putting on my gorgeous shoes to eat the early bird special makes me sad.

So for now, I just look at them. They do make my closet look pretty.

Lemon Quark

I found my Quark connection. Last weekend I went to the Farmer's Market and bought some Spring Hill Lemon Quark. Quark is a German style cream cheese and tastes like lemon cheesecake.....but lighter. I love it. You can put it on fruit or crackers but honestly, I just take a spoonful every now and then when I want a little sweet.
I just forced my friend, Tish, to try it. It's unanimous.

Coral Tree Cafe

English Breakfast Tea Latte

(It was almost the size of my head)

The other day, I met up with my friend, Mary, who I haven't seen in about......15 years. Tish and I met her at the Coral Tree Cafe in Encino. The Coral Tree is warm and inviting, just like Mary. I had the giant latte (above) and the aloha (below).

The aloha (on the right). Fresh Pear, Apple and Pineapple Juice.

The years have only made Mary more beautiful. We laughed for over an hour and caught up as much as we could.

We will definitely meet again soon. Next time I'll get the small latte and I'll order some food. It all looks delicious, organic and fresh. I will also put 2 hours worth of quarters in the meter so I don't have to make a mad dash to avoid a ticket in the middle of a juicy story.

Amidst all the craziness happening right now, I have to tell you, I rode a bull.

A mechanical bull.

And I tipped the guy 5 bucks to go easy on me.

We took Neighbor Wife out on her birthday to the Saddle Ranch.

There were fresh muffins an awesome Rib Eye so big I had to split it and a mechanical bull.

I signed a waiver, put down emergency contacts and rode that sucker....until I fell off.

(The secret is, you have to stay on.)

Red Quinoa Salad

Red Quinoa Salad

I've been researching this crazy super food, Quinoa, lately and I'm determined to incorporate it into our life. It's not only high in protein, it's a complete protein. What does that mean? A complete protein supplies all nine essential amino acids. It's got a whole bunch of other good things but the real question is, can we make it taste good? Because if it doesn't taste good no one will eat it.

I bought some Red Quinoa and dove in. It only takes about 20 minutes total to cook. I made it with vegetable broth instead of water. Once it was done cooking, I put it in a bowl and added......

Cherry tomatoes, halved.

Toasted pine nuts.

Onion chopped.

Lots of garlic.

A couple tablespoons of olive oil.

Freshly squeezed lemon juice.

Fresh Basil and Italian Parsley from my herb garden.

A little salt.

Here's the truth. Hubby walked in, looked at my Red Quinoa Salad and in a horrified voice asked, "What is this? It looks like something from the planet Zolderfron."

"Don't eat it yet! I have to add the herbs."

"Oooo I'm holding myself back."

"It's a super food. Tons of protein and extra goodness."

Once I finished the salad, Hubby (Mr. Snoopy Pants), walked back in and tried a bite.....then another.......then another. He won't admit it, but he liked it.

I'm going to add a little goat cheese to it for lunch.

Joyeux Dimanche - Boo!

I signed up to make cupcakes for the upcoming Halloween fund raiser at school. I was inspired by angry witch cupcakes made by the awesome Martha Stewart.

Last night, Neighbor Wife and I did a cupcake test run. They were really easy. A little green food coloring in white frosting for the face. The hair is licorice, the eyes are mini M&M's, the noses are candy corn and the hats are ice cream cones.

When it all falls down

White Bean and Garlic Soup

Friday night I started losing my voice, Saturday was worse and by Sunday I was down for the count. Monday morning I went to the doctor to get the magic pill that makes it all better. I had never met this doctor before but I swear she looked like she should be on T.V. The gorgeous doctor that looks good at 7am, wears the latests designer outfit and is definitely "the good guy". The kind of doctor that you still like even though she says "You have a virus and I can't help you, but I wish I could!" The kind of doctor that has an amazing bedside manner and explains that my Kindergardener probably brought this home but because we take such good care of him and his only stress is deciding what crayon to use for his Dracula Jack-O'-Lantern picture, his immune system is in a little bit better shape than mine.

So Hubby's been waiting on me hand and foot for the last 4 days. He has made me 3 different kinds of soup and finally brought out the big guns: White Bean And Garlic Soup. This should definitely kick this virus in the arse.

Meanwhile, I heard from Shaboom. Apparently she accidentally impaled her calf with a knitting needle, which made it impossible to go into the Carlsberg-owned Kronenbourg brewery in Strasbourg, what with all the bleeding and limping she was doing. So she and her boyfriend had to go to the quick mart and buy a couple of double deuce Kronenbourgs which they drank sitting on the curb. So romantic!

It is safe to say that Shaboom and I are a bit of a mess. Potato Leek Soup

Potato Leek Soup

It's deliciously rainy and cold today. A perfect time for this hot soup along with warm French bread and sweet butter.

Hot coco and a nap make for the ultimate rainy day.

Alton Brown's Potato Leek Soup Recipe

Ingredients

1 pound leeks, cleaned and dark green sections removed, approximately 4 to 5 medium
3 tablespoons unsalted butter
Heavy pinch kosher salt, plus additional for seasoning
14 ounces, approximately 3 small, Yukon gold potatoes, peeled and diced small
1 quart vegetable broth
1 cup heavy cream
1 cup buttermilk
1/2 teaspoon white pepper
1 tablespoon snipped chives

Directions

Chop the leeks into small pieces.

In a 6-quart saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter. Add the leeks and a heavy pinch of salt and sweat for 5 minutes. Decrease the heat to medium-low and cook until the leeks are tender, approximately 25 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Add the potatoes and the vegetable broth, increase the heat to medium-high, and bring to a boil. Reduce the heat to low, cover, and gently simmer until the potatoes are soft, approximately 45 minutes.

Turn off the heat and puree the mixture with an immersion blender until smooth. Stir in the heavy cream, buttermilk, and white pepper. Taste and adjust seasoning if desired. Sprinkle with chives and serve immediately, or chill and serve cold.

I feel like I've finally perfected my omelet. The key for me was to melt the butter first and to cook it at medium instead of medium high.

Green Olive Pasta With Pancetta

Happy Monday! Neighbor Wife was sweet enough to invite us over for dinner this weekend. She made this delightful Green Olive Pasta with pancetta, artichoke hearts, olive oil and parmesan. It was my first time eating Green Olive Pasta and I loved it. Needless to say there were no left overs.

I'm on week 2 of switching out green tea for coffee. I did sleep walk once last week so I don't think it's the ultimate answer for me. But I'm going to stick with it for 5 more weeks.

Rustic French Tomato Tart - Success!

I did a little research for my tomato tart and found David Lebovitz's blog Living The Sweet Life In Paris . I followed the recipe with just a few changes. One, I wasn't convinced that the crust would be crispy so I baked it for about 10 minutes before putting the mustard and topping on. Two, I didn't have big tomatoes so I used cherry tomatoes. I just cut them in half and poured them in.

I told Hubby about my experiment before I made it and he wanted NOTHING to do with it. I heard a cacophony of "Yuck, that sounds Ick!" (Sigh)
Luckily I have a Neighbor Wife who loves tomatoes.

When it was done, I tried it to make sure it was good. It was very, very good. This piece was for my Neighbor Wife. I snuck it over to her while she was decorating her front yard for Halloween. That's right, Halloween! She's a little on the enthusiastic side of this holiday. There are 5 phases to the decorating. Anyway, I wasn't expecting to be outside, obviously, since I was wearing Hubby's boxer shorts that say "DAD" on them and a wife beater shirt with a visible Not Sexy Bra! (So NOT French Sexy!)

Suddenly I'm feeding not just Neighbor Wife, but Jessie, her son, her Hubby and Karen from down the street. This stuff is moving! By the time I come back in, Hubby tells me he tried it and loves it. It even smells good, he said. There's only 2 pieces left and I'm confident they will be gone by tomorrow.

I will make this again. I will use more goat cheese, more tomatoes and more honey.

Pre-Tart

A few days ago I spent sometime with my friend, Gina, who just back back from a visit with her family in France. I drilled her like a new marine in bootcamp about the food she ate. She told me about a tomato tart her aunt made. Crust from scratch, gruyere cheese, tomatoes and herbs on top. I've done a little research and will attempt one tonight.

Stevia from my garden

This morning I cut some fresh Stevia from my garden. I brewed it with my green tea and it was .....interesting. It had a little bit of sweetness with an earthy quality and a bit of an aftertaste.

I talked with my sister, Tammy, yesterday who drinks green tea every day. She had the green tea journey a long time ago. She has found a special blend that is her favorite. It is loose tea that comes in a canister. It just has a number. Something like 913. Next time I see her she's going to share some leaves.

I'm going to take Adrienne's advice and use Truvia for now.

P.S. No sleepwalking last night! Poor Hubby's on high alert. It kind of freaks him out when I sleepwalk.

Green Tea

In my pink pot.

I come from a long line of coffee drinkers. Growing up, my Dad would start the coffee pot at 6:00 in the morning and it was full all day. He would start with regular and switch to decaf at noon. At my wedding reception I saw my Dad in the parking lot standing by his car. I walked over in my giant white dress and asked him if anything was wrong. He laughed and said "Oh no, I just wanted some coffee and I brought my thermos. I'm also checking to see how the Dodger's are doing." In case you are wondering, yes, there was coffee served at our wedding.

So when I say I love coffee I mean it. I could drink it all day. Except for the fact that I've been sleepwalking for the last few weeks. Hubby said I've been sleepwalking a lot. One night I tried to get out the back door. Luckily we have 3 locks on that door as I only got 2 open and then gave up. One night I told him I was going to get a game ready for 5. Then Saturday night I walked into a doorframe and bruised or broke my pinky toe. I have no memory of most of these. I did wake up after the pinky toe situation.

So I am going to give up coffee for 6 weeks and see if my nightly antics subside. I've heard all the wonderful things green tea has to offer. (Wonderful things green tea has to offer) Here's the teensy tiny problem. I don't love the taste of it. So I'm going to use stevia with it to give it a little sweetener. I have a stevia plant in my herb garden. This seems like a grey area to me. It's natural but is it good for you?

My friend, Jessie, had her sweets exchange this month. The theme was Fancy Schmancy.

I made my Fanciest Schmanciest Dessert so far. Orange Flower Pavlovas With Strawberries.

Recipe from Bon Appetit.

Her Momma made an apple pie with fresh apples from her tree.
There was no recipe, she just threw it together.

It was the best apple pie I've ever had.

Ingrid made these yummy Lace Cookies.

Lace Cookies

Yield: 20 sandwich cookies

Cook Time: 8-10 minutes

Ingredients:

1/2 cup sifted all-purpose flour
1/2 cup granulated sugar
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon baking powder
Pinch of salt
1/2 cup old-fashioned oats
1/3 cup unsalted butter, melted
2 tablespoons heavy cream
2 tablespoons light corn syrup
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 ounces dark chocolate, melted

Directions:

1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees F. Line two baking sheets with Splits or parchment paper. Set aside.

2. In a medium bowl, combine flour, sugar, cinnamon, baking powder, salt, and oats. Set aside.

3. In the bowl of a stand mixer, combine butter, cream, cory syrup, and vanilla. Mix with the beater blade until smooth. Slowly add in the dry ingredients. Mix to combine.

4. Drop about 3/4 of a teaspoon of batter onto prepared baking sheets. Try to make the cookies all the same size. Place only 12 cookies on each sheet because the cookies will spread in the oven.

5. Bake for 8-10 minutes. Remove from oven and let cookies cool on baking sheets for 2 minutes. Carefully transfer cookies to a wire rack and cool completely.

6. Find 2 cookies that are about the same size. Spread one cookie with melted chocolate. Place other cookie on top. Repeat with remaining cookies.

Jessie made these lovely marshmallows dipped in chocolate.

Chocolate covered coconut marshmallows: (She didn't make it with coconut)

Ingredients
a few chopped up 60% chocolate bars tempered for dipping
7 ounces sweetened shredded coconut, toasted
1 recipe Homemade Marshmallow batter, recipe follows
Confectioners' sugar

Directions

Homemade Marshmallows:

3 packages unflavored gelatin
1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
1 cup light corn syrup
1/4 teaspoon kosher salt
1 tablespoon pure vanilla extract
Confectioners' sugar, for dusting

Combine the gelatin and 1/2 cup of cold water in the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with the whisk attachment and allow to sit while you make the syrup.

Meanwhile, combine the sugar, corn syrup, salt, and 1/2 cup water in a small saucepan and cook over medium heat until the sugar dissolves. Raise the heat to high and cook until the syrup reaches 240 degrees F on a candy thermometer. Remove from the heat.

With the mixer on low speed, slowly pour the sugar syrup into the dissolved gelatin. Put the mixer on high speed and whip until the mixture is very thick, about 15 minutes. Add the vanilla and mix thoroughly.

Very lightly oil a 9x13 non-metal pan. Sprinkle half the toasted coconut over the bottom. Scoop/spread in the marshmallow batter and smooth the top of the mixture with very lightly oiled hands. Sprinkle on the remaining toasted coconut and press it in lightly. Allow to dry uncovered at room temperature for at least 8 hours or overnight.

Remove the marshmallows from the pan and cut into squares. Dip each piece carefully in the tempered chocolate. Set dipped marshmallows on parchment-lined sheets until they are dry/set. Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to one week.

Mary made these delightful Peanut Butter Sandwich Cookies.

Ingredients

Cookies:

1 1/4 cups all purpose flour

1 tsp baking soda

1/2 cup (one stick) unsalted butter

1/2 cup sugar

1/2 packed light brown sugar

3/4 cup chunky peanut butter

1 large egg

1 tsp vanilla

3/4 cup peanut butter chips

Filling:

8 oz bitter sweet Chocolate, chopped

6 Tbsp unsalted butter cut into pieces

1 tsp vanilla extract

1-Cookies: Heat oven to 350 Line 2 baking sheets with parchment

2-in a medium bowl whisk together flour salt baking soda and baking powder

3-in large bowl blend sugars and butters until well blended,add peanut butter,add egg and vanilla, beat in flour mixture until just blended,Stir in peanut butter chips

4- Drop 8 (2 tbsp) balls of dough on cookie sheet, about 3 inches apart, press floured fork into tops to make cross hatch design and spread dough to about 3 inch rounds. Bake about 12 minutes until edges are brown. Let cool two minutes on cookie sheet then remove to rack to cool completely. Repeat with remaining dough and second sheet.

5-Filling: in a microwave safe bowl melt chocolate and butter for 1 minute whisk until smooth and add vanilla. Chill until filling is thick enough to spread

6-spread filling on the bottom of one cookie then press another on top to make a sandwich. Repeat with remaining cookies.

I can't believe I didn't get a picture of Natasha's Chocolate Souffle! But she was nice enough to send her recipe. It was still warm from the oven with fresh whipped cream to top it off. And she gave everyone Tinkerbell cookie cutters. Love her.

Bistro Garden Chocolate Soufflé

5 egg yolks

¾ cup sugar

4 drops vanilla

1 cup flour

2 cups milk

2 oz un-sweet chocolate melted

8 egg whites

Additional sugar

Powdered sugar

Sweetened whip cream

Beat egg yolks with ½ cup sugar and vanilla until light and fluffy. Gradually beat in flour until paste is formed.

Meanwhile, bring milk to a boil. Add egg mixture all at once. Bring again to a boil. Whisk quickly until paste is well incorporated and smooth. Continue to stir with wooden spoon until thick as light choux paste or pastry cream. Add melted chocolate and stir until blended. Cool.

Beat 3 egg whites with 1/3 of remaining sugar until frothy. Add 3 more egg whites and half of the remaining sugar. Continue beating. Add remaining egg whites and sugar. Beat till whites are stiff and shiny but not dry. Fold eggs into batter. Spoon into two 5 inch soufflé dishes.

Bake at 350 degrees for 30 minutes, or for 1 hour for one larger soufflé.

Top with whip cream. Serve warm.

Bubba Gumps And The Dancing Queen

Steamed Seafood

This weekend I was lucky enough to celebrate 3 birthdays. It started at a restaurant called Bubba Gumps. It's a family friendly, high energy restaurant that is based on the movie Forest Gump. I ordered the yummy steamed seafood. After eating the lobster claw and some of the crab legs I passed my plate over to Hubby, The Sgt. Major and my nephew Seth to polish off. I forgot to taste the Jasmine Rice but I'm sure it was good. We ordered some dessert to share and when our server brought it, he and 7 other servers sang a delightful birthday song to Grandma Dee and Tammy. It's a happy place with good food.

That night I went to a rollerskating rink for my beautiful friend Tina's birthday. It's been a long time since I was on skates. For the first 15 minutes I was desperately clutching my friend Chris's arm for fear of falling. Chris has his own skates and is obviously a pro. He talked me down and gently sent me on my way. I found my rhythm again and after an hour and a half of skating found myself grooving to Abba's Dancing Queen. It was definitely a moment that brought me back to my childhood.

New Smells

I was shopping at Sephora the other day when I tried this. It's supposed to have all of the good stuff and none of the bad stuff. When I got pregnant I couldn't handle any perfume smell at all. This never went away. But for some reason I'm attracted to this sent. Especially the Vanilla and Blackberry. I think I have found my new smell for awhile.

How To Make Wild Rice Taste Good

Who needs the Farmer's Market when there's a Grandma Dee in my life?! I brought all this home from her garden on Sunday. 3 different kinds of tomatoes, those mystery chili peppers, gorgeous onions, basil flowers, and mint.

Just look at those onions! Now, what to do with it?

I bought this bag of Wild Rice on impulse one day. I had never had it and it looked really healthy.

You have to wash and drain the rice before you cook it. I decided to cook it with chicken stock instead of water to give it extra flavor.

At the very end I added frozen peas and corn. I tasted it. Hmmmm. It needed something else.

Meanwhile I had been cooking some of Grandma Dee's tomatoes, onions and basil flowers with a little olive oil and garlic.

I added some of that on top. Mmmm much better. It still needed something else.
But what?

And then I remembered that the French throw an egg on almost anything. So that's what I did. The final touch was some of the chili pepper flakes from Grandma Dee's mystery chili peppers.

This will be my new lunch for the next few days.

My beautiful friend, Tina, took me to a fantastic restaurant for my birthday.

It's called Boa.

We started out with

Goat Cheese Baklava

Pistachios, Black Truffles, Frisee

Next we split a Chop Chop Salad.

Boa is known for there steaks so I ordered the Marinated Skirt Steak Frites

This was our yummy dessert.

Everything was incredibly perfect!

Normandy Day Two

I went biking AGAIN today. Real biking. With a really swollen *ahem* area due to yesterday's activity. I call it SSS (squished squeak syndrome.)

I would have rather been doing this kind of biking like my friends (who are putting me up in their summer house.)

But instead I was further agitating my SSS by riding around checking out boring crap like nature and architecture.
Who needs that? If you can't buy it at Target, it has no value. Right?!

Birthday Bash

Hubby gave me a Birthday Party.

He made the radishes with herb butter.

The bread was drizzled with olive oil, toasted in the broiler, rubbed with a garlic clove, topped with cheese then put in the broiler again.

Then he added a little freshly ground black pepper.

Yum.

Dinner was grilled steak, grilled vegetables and a wonderful potato salad he made that included blue cheese and bacon.

My sister in law made me a chocolate cake. So yummy.

Tammy gave me this basket. It has all of my favorite things.

There were even 2 artichokes!!!

I had an awesome day.

That night we sat outside and watched a lightning storm.

Portobello Mushroom Salad

This is such an amazing salad.

First I sauteed the Portobello Mushrooms in butter, olive oil, garlic, salt, pepper and white balsamic vinegar.

While the giant mushroom was sauteing, I cut up some Romaine, Tomato and Avocado, tossed it with olive oil and white vinegar. Goat cheese and capers add the final touch with the mushrooms fitting snugly on the side.

The mushrooms are an amazing stand in for meat. You'll never miss it.

Banana Bread

Last night we had planned on having Split Pea Soup and a little salad for dinner. Hubby started the soup and I noticed the 4 giant bananas that were on their way out. I announced that I was going to make banana bread. Hubby thought this amusing since I've never made banana bread which only makes me want to do it more.

I found a recipe here. Luckily I had all the ingredients because I really don't know if I was motivated enough to make a special trip.

Neighbor Wife and Ballerina Girl came over and suddenly it was a party. There were forts being made, Legos everywhere and then the Banana Bread came out of the oven before the Pea Soup was done.

Butter was spread on the warm bread. Neighbor Wife requested the end pieces, the kids ate 2 slices, Hubby ate some and I had a slice. The Pea Soup was forgotten. It sits in our fridge for dinner tonight along with a few tiny slices of the delicious bread.

Herb Goat Cheese Spread Served With Radishes

This was inspired by a lovely Goat Cheese Spread I bought at The Farmer's Market last week.

(And wondering what I could do with some herbs from my garden.)

Goat Cheese

Parsley

Chives

Celery

Salt

Pepper

Chop the herbs and celery very fine.

Mix together with the goat cheese.

Sprinkle Kosher salt and pepper around the sides.

Spread the mixture on some juicy radishes.

Voila!

End Of Summer Projects

Herb Garden.

We finished the backyard project and planted the herb garden. I planted Basil, Oregano, Parsley a few pepper plants and a little tomato plant.

We took out everything and replaced it with sod. Off to the left of the Tiki Hut is my Plumeria Garden.

At the end of the Plumeria Garden is the Secret Love Stone we found. It's magical. If you stand on the love stone and make a wish it comes true. (True story)

The Plumeria are in full bloom. This is my favorite time of year. In a few months all the flowers and leaves fall off and they go to sleep for the winter. But for now it's like a tropical island.

This is what it looked like for most of the summer.

It's been so hot lately I've been experimenting with salads. I thought Shaboom posted a salad from a fancy schmany French restaurant served with an egg, but I must have been dreaming because I can't find it.

This was really good.

Strawberries With Balsamic Vinegar

It's been crazy busy over here and I haven't posted in awhile but I have a minute and I wanted to share something wonderful. Strawberries With Balsamic Vinegar: Recipe from Ina Garten.

I had no time to cook anything for the baking club so I tried this recipe from Ina. It was a complete hit and so easy. I really didn't think those flavors would go together, especially the black pepper. But everyone loved it.

There's some wonderful dishes I tried this week from Jennifer. I have to get the recipes and then I'll post. These include Bacon Relish and a delightful Peach Cobbler.

There's a park in the 19th arrondissement called Les Buttes Chaumont that has absolutely breath-taking views. Since it's on the opposite side of town from where I live, I don't make it over there as often as I like. Last night I decided to have dinner at one of the restaurants in the park and went for a little walk afterwards.

Today on my walk I saw lots of beauty...

I can totally picture this statue in Karen's newly re-landscaped back yard. He would fit in well with her tiki hut, n'est-ce pas?

On my way to the Louvre...

Behind the Palais Royal I spotted this gorgeous, typically French store front. Love the color. It's August in Paris and everyone's on vacation ...even the shop keepers. So no new shoes today ...le sigh.

This gigantic flower pot sits atop the Pompidou center on the Georges Restaurant terrace. Sadly, there seem to be no ginormous flowers growing in it.

Unicorn came to visit me to celebrate his big birthday here in Paris. We had a wonderful day walking all over Paris. We went to l'Orangerie to see Monet's water lillies. We walked through the Jardin des Tuileries and all over the Marais. We drank and ate throughout our entire promenade... at Fauchon, La Durée, Café Beaubourg, Georges (atop the Pompidou Center,) and at Glou - one of my favorite restaurants.

We even witnessed a beautiful storm rage over the west side of Paris. It was quite a beautiful day.

On Sunday, 5 and I visited Grandma Dee. In her garden, 2 volunteer chili pepper plants have popped up. Since she didn't plant them, we have no idea exactly what they are. I did a little research but I don't know for sure.

They're not very big but hotter than a Serrano. Let me know if you have any ideas.

Look at these gorgeous tomatoes from Grandma Dee's garden. There's really nothing like them. Even at the Farmer's Market.

Neighbor Wife came over with her food processor and we decided to make Roasted Salsa.

Tomatoes, Onion, Garlic, Mystery Chili Peppers drizzled with olive oil, salt and pepper in a 450 degree oven for 20 minutes.

Lovely little hotties.

Fresh out of the oven, I popped all of the veggies into the Food Processor with some fresh lime juice. I only put in 3 little peppers and it was plenty spicy. Grandma Dee also gave me some clippings from her cilantro plant. Tammy explained that the little seeds are a spice called Coriander. I used all of it, including the flowers from the plant. From my little herb garden, I used parsley, oregano and chives.

This is absolutely the best salsa I've ever had. We ate it while it was still hot.

In fact Neighbor Wife just called and asked if we can make more. Now. She's craving it.

Hubby's Spare Ribs-Not French Skinny

Hubby made some AMAZING Spare Ribs.

Spicy and not spicy.

The spicy involved a rub with cayenne pepper, salt and chili pepper. Then, while he was grilling, he the ribs with a sopping sauce of vinegar, mustard, brown sugar, salt and pepper.

He won't give me the exact recipe.

Just taste, taste, taste......

Grill some jalapenos and green onions for a side dish.

Corn on the cob with butter, salt and pepper.

These potatoes taste like baked potatoes with everything.

Mash the potatoes, add bacon, cooked and cut up in little pieces, green onions finely chopped, butter, and parmesan cheese.

It was so good.

Enjoy.

Radishes with Butter and Salt

My friend, Jennifer, introduced me to the lovely dish- Radishes with salt and softened butter.

I had no idea it was such a French dish but it's very yummy.

Some people cut a little wedge in the radish, put the butter in the wedge and drag the radish through the salt. (This seems a little labor intensive to me.)

Maybe Shaboom can weigh in on this one.

All I know is that I have discovered the radish. I have learned to admire it, taste it, and appreciate the delicate flavor.

This is my new dinner.

During the day I'm drinking carrot juice. It's like a sugary snack.

And this big boy. Wow. I cut it into fourths, steam it, and have one fourth a day for lunch.

I make a mayo with curry and cayenne. Mmmmm.

All this, a 2 mile walk, and I'm back on The French Skinny.

Going Home

Today we check out of La Quinta. It's already in the 80's at 7:00 in the morning. We swim for a few hours before packing up.

We said goodbye to my kids favorite place. The Lollipop Store.

On the drive home we made one stop. Hadley Orchards.

They're famous for delicious dates and date shakes.

We have been together 24 hours a day for 4 days straight. Once we get home, we all go into different rooms for some alone time. Hubby watches golf, 5 goes in his room and plays with Legos, and I finally open the book I brought for the first time in 4 days.

It's good to be home.

Vacation - Day Three

Good morning Prickly Pear Cactus.

We woke up to a beautiful desert morning, had coffee in our usual spot and headed out to The Living Desert.

They have plants, animals, a petting zoo,......

and an incredible model train display. Starting Oct. 1 they will have 12 trains running at the same time. My kid was fascinated. He watched the trains for a half an hour. Then it was time to feed the baby giraffe.

He took it right out of our hands. Amazing eyelashes.

5 made lots of new friends.

Back at La Quinta we swam for hours. We went to Twenty 6 again for dinner. The waitress walked up and asked if we were ready to order. My kid breaks out with "Can I talk to the chef please?" (Too much Food Network?) Anyway, she laughed and a few minutes later the Chef came out and said hello. He makes 5 a special plate and recommended this for us.

They're Chicken Pops. They come with a super spicy sauce and a cheese sauce to cool it down. Hubby and I shared. I'm glad we had these on the last night because we would have had them for breakfast, lunch and dinner every day.
